Even though Carthage is located outside of her home state of Minnesota, Mara Lysne ’25 couldn’t think of another college she wanted to attend after taking a tour of the campus. “I immediately knew that Carthage was the place for me,” said Mara. “There were so many ways to get involved, the people were friendly, and the campus was stunning!”

Mara immediately became involved in many on-campus clubs. She is a part of the National Dance Education Organization, Enactus, Alpha Chi Omega, Carthage United to Rescue Earth, Horticulture Club, and the dance program. She has also enjoyed many exciting travel opportunities, including trips to Paris, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and New York City.

“Coming to Carthage was easily the best decision I have ever made. The people here are so kind, the professors are always willing to help and want you to succeed, and there are so many ways to get involved. Carthage will always and forever be one of my favorite places.”

Why Carthage?

“I stumbled across Carthage’s website in my college search while looking for schools in the Midwest. Initially, I was drawn to Carthage because of the lake and all the things that the College had to offer. After doing more research, scheduling a tour, and stepping on campus, I immediately knew that Carthage was the place for me. There were so many ways to get involved, the people were friendly, and the campus was stunning!”

Campus involvement

“Being from Minnesota nine hours away, I decided to get involved in as much as possible in order to meet people at the College. Because of this, I gained many leadership roles for which I will forever be grateful.

“Currently, I am the president of the National Dance Education Organization; the director of external relations and project leader of Cloth for Change through Enactus; and a member, historian, and service chair of Alpha Chi Omega. I’m also a part of Carthage United to Rescue Earth, Horticulture Club, and the dance program.

Golden opportunities

“Carthage has given me many experiences that I will be forever grateful for. Through Enactus, an entrepreneurial business club, I was invited to attend the Enactus National Competition in New York with the rest of the e-board and project leaders. I gained so much inspiration for our projects in Wisconsin and immensely enjoyed being able to network with other young entrepreneurs from all over the country.”

Internships or campus employment

“On campus, I have three amazing jobs that I love. One of the three jobs I have on campus is co-coordinating Interfaith Lunch through the Center for Faith and Spirituality. Interfaith Lunch brings people with all different backgrounds together to broaden our knowledge of faith and spirituality, or the lack thereof.

“Along with Interfaith Lunch, I am a student ambassador in the Office of Admissions and recently took on my third job working in the Fine Arts Box Office through the Office of Performing and Visual Arts.”

Career goal

“After graduating from Carthage, I would love to gain experience in the marketing side of business with an end goal of owning a small business.”

Favorite memory

“One of my favorite Carthage memories was watching the men’s volleyball national championship game in spring 2022. The arena was packed, and the students brought the energy! Seeing so many Carthage students come out to support our school and team was so fun.”
